What is Embrace the Hype?
Embrace the Hype is a primarily government run organization aimed at providing opportunities for Australians and our neighbours to learn, develop and showcase their talents on the biggest of stages around the world and Australia. The first iteration took place in 2016 as part of the Light of the World festival held in Mabel Park and every year it has grown as an organization and this year stands to be our biggest event yet!
Chief Organiser and Co-Founder
Joshua Wong has been organising events since he started dancing in 2015. Joshua is driven to improve the Hip Hop community, an aspiration that is at the core of his events. He is an established performer and has danced at QPAC, The Powerhouse, the Southbank Centre in London in addition to various contracts on east coast of Australia. The first iteration of Embrace the Hype was a three hour slot at the Light of the World Festival at Mabel Park in Springwood. He paid for a DJ, return flights and judge fees out of his own pocket to establish this brand. Joshua feels privileged to constantly develop the Embrace the Hype brand and is proud to partner with Redlands Performing Arts Centre.
General Manager and Co-Founder
Aysa Flynn is an established musical theatre performer and creator in Brisbane. Her most recent credit was her performance as the company swing for Bare the Musical at Brisbane Powerhouse for Understudy Productions. Her tertiary education and experiences have given her industry level knowledge of the performing arts which is an invaluable asset to the team. She has been a part of the Embrace the Hype Team since its partnership with Redlands Performing Arts Centre in 2018. As a young Filipino-Australian, she recognises the privilege that is associated with being (and staying) in the Australian arts industry. With Embrace the Hype, she strives to give the next wave of artists better opportunities to keep them afloat.
Media Co-ordinator and Head Caterer
Melissa Wong has a rich history working in the public sector with numerous ties to important members of the Redlands community. She is invaluable to the Embrace the Hype team due to her knowledge, skillset, putting together press releases, advertising information for potential clients and has done so on many occasions. In addition to these skills, Melissa has also worked as a professional chef and catered for many events on both a large and small scale. She is excited to be putting the apron on again for Embrace the Hype in 2019.
Dani is currently a third year student at the University of Queensland where she studies Communications, majoring in Public Relations. Once graduated, Dani aspires to work as a publicity and marketing representative in the entertainment industry. Enjoying an extensive background in musical theatre and performance herself, Dani is familiar with the ins and outs of the field, and looks forward to being an advocate for continued inclusivity and diversity within the industry. Embrace the Hype has been an optimal chance to learn about Krump culture, of which she was previously unfamiliar, and has found the experience abundantly rewarding thus far.
